EN 1957 Mattress Testing

EN 1957 Mattress Testing: What is it and why it matters in product development

How EN 1957 testing shapes better products and more confident choices

When it comes to choosing or developing a high-quality product, comfort on day one is just the beginning. What truly matters is how that comfort holds up over time. That’s where EN 1957, the European standard for durability and firmness testing, plays a crucial role.

At Flex2000, we apply this norm in our Sleep Lab to simulate years of use helping us create better products, give our partners more confidence, and ensure consistency and trust across every foam and pocket spring we deliver.

What is EN 1957?

EN 1957 is the European testing standard used to assess the long-term performance of sleep systems, particularly focusing on durability and firmness.

The test simulates repeated use over time by subjecting a sample to 30,000 compression cycles using a weighted roller. This mimics the pressure of someone lying, turning, and getting in and out of bed over several years allowing us to understand how a product behaves not just today, but for the long haul.

What does it measure?

EN 1957 focuses on two key aspects:

  • Height loss: Indicates how much the product deforms or compresses after prolonged use

  • Firmness and hardness (HS value): Measured both before and after the roller test, this reveals how the level of support evolves over time

These are objective, quantifiable results that offer valuable insight into durability, comfort stability, and overall performance.

Why does it matter?

Reliable testing means better decisions. EN 1957:

  • Ensures consistency between batches and materials

  • Validates comfort claims with real data

  • Reduces risk of deformation or early sagging

  • Builds trust between supplier and client

  • Supports innovation without compromising quality

Whether you're working with foam cores, spring systems, or hybrid solutions, understanding how a configuration performs under EN 1957 conditions is key to delivering a dependable experience.

EN 1957 at Flex2000 Sleep Lab

At Flex2000, the EN 1957 test is integrated into our product development process.

Our Sleep Lab is equipped with:

  • A certified EN 1957 roller test machine

  • Technology to analyse HS values, ILD (indentation load deflection), and zoned comfort

  • Controlled conditions that simulate real-world pressure and motion

We use this equipment to test various constructions, from simple cores to advanced, multi-layered solutions, and compare different versions side by side. That means our partners benefit from a development process grounded in precision, not guesswork.

By using EN 1957 as a benchmark, we can anticipate how comfort will change over time, allowing us to fine-tune each product for both short-term feel and long-term satisfaction.

A standard that supports smarter choices

At Flex2000, EN 1957 isn’t just a regulatory check - it’s a tool that helps us build better, smarter, more reliable products.

If you're seeking consistency, measurable comfort, and long-term peace of mind, working with teams who test according to EN 1957 ensures you’re making decisions based on facts, not assumptions.

Because real comfort isn’t just what you feel today - it’s what lasts.

Because comfort is meant to be shared:
